Many companies underestimate the importance of marketing and especially PR.
Marketing doesn't have to be expensive, and generally advertising doesn't work (unless its tested and a ROI can be proven).
All marketing should be tested, and the results known. You must understand what works and what doesn't, testing and optimisation should always happen.
Just because your biggest competitor does their marketing in a certain way does not mean its right, they may just have a big marketing budget which they can afford to loose.
The reality for most people is that marketing is generally the first expense to disappear from the budget, yet without some degree of marketing your position in the market could be lost.
